Art Card Paper

Art Card Paper

Choosing the right art paper can feel overwhelming because there are so many types available. The ideal choice depends on whether you are drawing, painting, or experimenting with different techniques.

Paper Composition

  • Paper is made from interwoven fibers; the longer the fibers, the stronger the paper.

  • Fine art papers are typically made from plant fibers.

  • Newsprint and sugar paper are suitable for quick sketches and developing compositions, but they are not durable over time.

    • Newsprint contains lignin, which causes acidity, making the paper brittle and yellow.

    • Colored sugar papers fade quickly.

  • For longevity, always choose acid-free or pH-neutral paper.

Paper Weights

  • Paper weight is measured in gsm (grams per square meter) or lbs (pounds).

  • Fine art papers generally range from 120gsm to 850gsm.

  • Oriental papers are often lighter in weight.

  • Common choices:

    • Drawing paper – around 130gsm.

    • Snowdon Cartridge – 300gsm, popular for heavy sketching and erasing.

  • Rule of thumb: The heavier the paper, the thicker and more durable it is.

Surface Types

Different surfaces affect the texture and finish of artwork:

  1. Rough Surface (Torchon/Grossa)

    • Most textured option.

    • Made by pressing blankets onto the paper during manufacture.

    • Ideal for bold textures and expressive work.

  2. Cold Pressed / NOT / Fina

    • Most popular for watercolor artists.

    • Also widely used for drawing.

    • Paper is pressed a second time without blankets, giving a balanced texture.

  3. Hot Pressed (Satinata/Liscia)

    • Smoothest surface, created by pressing on a heated cylinder.

    • Fibers are bonded closely together.

    • Best for botanical art, fine detailing, and precise work.

  4. Pastel Surfaces

    • Requires paper with a tooth (texture) so the pastel adheres properly.

    • Popular choices include:

      • Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper

      • Fully primed textured papers

      • Soft, unsized printmaking papers

Final Note

The right art card paper depends on your medium, technique, and durability needs. For sketches and practice, lightweight papers work fine. For professional artwork or archival purposes, opt for heavier, acid-free papers with the right surface texture to match your style.
